Overview
WquGuru published two open PDF books providing deep architectural analysis of Claude Code and Codex harness architectures. This isn't a feature comparison chart, but an analysis of design philosophy at the system skeleton level.
Widely cited in the community, Chi Jianqiang specifically recommended them, commenting that "even liberal arts students can read them with great interest."
The Two Books
1. "Harness Engineering — Claude Code Design Guide"
"Not a source code annotation compilation, nor a product feature introduction. It focuses on how Claude Code constrains an unstable model into a sustainably running engineering order."

"The easiest mistake when comparing two AI coding harnesses is using a feature comparison table as intellectual history. Write 'has skills' on the left, write 'has skills' on the right; write 'has sandbox' on the left, write 'has sandbox' on the right. The advantage of this approach is efficiency; the disadvantage is that it says almost nothing. Because identical nouns in tools don't mean identical system skeletons. Just as two cities both building bridges doesn't mean they were designed for the same river."
This passage precisely captures the most common error in harness comparisons: surface similarity masking fundamental architectural differences.
Chi Jianqiang's Commentary
Chi Jianqiang (@sagacity) raised an important question when recommending these two books:
"Agents were well-known since last year, so why is the accompanying 'harness' only emerging now?"
His observation: harnesses always existed, but were previously wrapped inside each company's products and not discussed independently. As Claude Code and Codex's source/design became progressively public, the harness layer emerged as an independent engineering discipline.
Why This Matters
These two books are currently the deepest public analyses of Claude Code and Codex harness internals. They establish an important principle:
Comparing harnesses should not compare feature lists, but compare the assumptions behind design decisions.
A feature called "memory" in different harnesses may be based on entirely different architectural assumptions. Understanding these assumptions is what explains why the same model performs vastly differently across different harnesses.
